width of a table

hi.
i am fed up with this. trying to set width of table but can't get it right.

here, my second column streth even though i specified width in pixel.

i thought width would be fixed and height would be streth.

only way to get it to work would be to insert

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa<wbr>aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa 

tags into that long string or insert whitespaces.
