On Friday this forum will be combed for the names of folks that have contributed. Two winners will be e-mailed and they will have their choice of one of the following books:
Beginning XML by Kurt Cagle, et. al.
XSLT Programmer's Reference by Michael Kay Professional XML by Mark Birbeck, et. al.
Professional Java XML Programming with Servlets and JSP by Tom Myers and Alexander Nakhimovsky
Thanks to WROX press for providing the books and suggesting the giveaway! If this is a success, we might do this more often!
Well, You can go to the store and buy it. Or, you can participate in some of the threads in this forum - then you have a chance at getting it. On Friday, I'll collect up all the names and stick them in a text file. Then I'll have a random number generation program spit out a number in the range of 1 .. number of names. The number will line up with one of the names. Then I'll do it again to find the second winner.
The giveaway is for anybody, anywhere. I warned WROX about our international membership and asked if postage would be a problem. They told me that they are based in Europe, so postage anywhere is not a problem. I should warn you that any names that don't follow our name guidelines will not be included in the giveaway. So you might want to create a new account that follows the naming guidelines.
XML and Java are a perfect match because Java is all about portable code and XML is all about portable data.

Paul, I posted several notes today to this topic before I saw your note about first name/last name. I registed a few months ago and have not posted any messages until recently. It might help if people like me got some sort of notification in case they don't see your posting. I created a new profile and think it's pretty clear to new users, but some may still not be aware. Thanks, Bill Pearce (formerly bpearce4827)

Does everybody who participated in this forum get the same chance, or does the number of postings count? -Mirko
Bill, It's a prominent rule when you register. Plus it is outlined when you fill in the registration. I'm not sure how to be more clear. I kinda hate to mention it cuz then I feel like an ogre, beating people up about it. I can understand using an alias for a few posts while you get used to the system. But after that I think a "normal" name is not too much to ask for. Mirko, I haven't decided on that one yet. Probably number of posts, but "empty posts" definitely don't count. "gouru", I suggest you create an account with a more appropriate name and then participate in the discussions here. Chuanshuang, Sorry, I don't understand your question.

I want to have the books, but how? I know the rule now, but how can I get my real name account after I forgot the password and can not get it back by email? thanks Zhao [This message has been edited by weisheZhao (edited September 19, 2000).]
"weisheZhao", If you aren't going to follow the rules here, you will need to buy your books.

Hi All, I am relatively new to XML. Previously I had been working on server side Java. But now, I've to work with XML, XFDL and Internet Forms. I've to admit that I'm quite lost in the world of XML. I'd definitely appreciate help regarding parsing of XML/XFDL forms using Java. Which may be the best parser? I can definitely do something good with the books. Paul, please include me too in the draw. Rgds Manoj.

Hi, I must say this is really a great way to liven up this part of the saloon. The programmer certification and other java parts get most of the attention. Great job folks !!!

Hi guys, Just to remind you that even if you don't win a book - you can buy them, y'know! Go to the Wrox site and have a look: www.wrox.com By the way - how do you get promoted from being a Greenhorn?
Okay, I gotta lock out this thread. To talk about XML, please participate in threads other that this one. This thread was to discuss the giveaway, not XML. Sorry for the confusion. If you still want to talk about the giveaway, check the thread in the JavaRanch forum. Or the thread in the "Blatant Advertising" forum. To talk about getting to be a "ranch hand", please go to the JavaRanch forum. To talk about using your firt and last name, please go to the JavaRanch forum. Remember, to be qualified for the giveaway, you have to paticipate in discussion in this forum, but not in this thread. Just posting a message that says "enter me in contest" is not participating in the discussion. Also, names that do not follow the "firstname, space and last name" convention will be disqualified for breaking the JavaRanch rules.
