DTD means: Document Type Definition, you use it to validate that your XML file has the elements that you define in your DTD. Is like a dictionary. Supose that you make a java program that parses XML files, and you need the value of specific elements, but you dont write the xml file, thats the job of other people in your company, so giving them a DTD you ensure that the syntaxis of the xml they gave to you for parsing them with your java program doesnt have mistakes. XML is the data and DTD is the meta-data. DTD is a blueprint of an XML document and the document is sometimes called 'an instance' of the DTD. I should point out here, that DTD is a cryptic and an old standard which is becoming unpopular because of its limitations. It is going to get replaced by another metadata schema called 'XML Schema'. I have no clue though, about 'dtf'. Anyone?
