XML basic question

Hello,
I am starting to study J2EE. Before delving too deeply into that, I need to understand some other things at least fairly well, including XML. I have been to a couple of online tutorials and found XML to be interesting, but I would like to ask, when is XML necessary, and what are the main advantages to using it?
