What are data islands?

HI,
I'm not an expert on XML but I think data islands refers to XML data tags included inside a HTML document. To work properly the browser must implement XML correctly - IE5+ (not sure about NS6).

How and why do we require XML tag in HTML document?

We would use it to allow an external xml data file to hand over info that might change frequently to a web page.
In this way maintainance could be done on the text-based xml file rather than on the html file which simplifies things.
Other HTML pages could then hook into the same data without having to rewrite it all
I'm sure the experts could think of some more high-brow reasons too
