You become a bartender when another bartender/sheriff nominates you in the "voting" process. The same process of meritocracy is used to promote a bartender to a sheriff. Cheers!

so bottomline is: a ranchhand should be on the good side of one or more (read all) bartenders and a bartender should be on the good side of one or more (read all) sheriff's.... a greenhorn automatically becomes a ranchhand if (s)he is on the good side of all ranchhands, bartenders and sheriffs.... - satya
