How to add line separator in xsl for text output?

I an working on a xml document and using a xsl stylesheet to transfer it to a plain text format and save to a text file. But I can't add a line separator so that the whole file is one single string. I have tried <xsl:text></xsl:text>, it did not work.
Thanks a lot.
