How make xs:List take a comma as delimiter?

I want to use a delimiter for my list, but I can only seem to get the Schema to accept spaces.
The problem with spaces is that if an item has a space in it, it will tokenize on that space, thus improperly breaking up my list. Does anyone know how to make this acceptable?

Unfortunately (or not, depends on your viewpoint), the <xsd:list> element only supports whitespace as a delimiter.

Well that is stupid. Why not give the option with an attribute such as delimiter="," or delimiter=" "?
Thanks for the info.

As the link I posted implies, it was discussed but dropped for certain reasons mentioned in the same post. No can do.

Yeah, except the IBM guy got it wrong. He says, "better markup would be to use explicit elements," but you can do that!
For example:

I don't get it. How does the explicit technique relate to being able to specify a custom delimiter for the list?

It doesn't. It relates to the part of that guy's message where he was saying that lists were problematic because you couldn't do a list of explicit elements. I was showing that you could. It was tangentally related.
