I am new(er) to the Java scene and am looking for a good XML editor. Could someone please provide some insight into the ka-ba-jillion XML editors out there. I would like to stay in the $0 range (open source). Any insight to a good product would be apprecaited. Thanks a bunch.

Could you post a list of editors you are considering....so people who used them can comment. Till recently I was using an editor called "vi". I am slowly transitioning to Eclipse.
I found xmlspy free edition good, but i mostly use text editors like textpad/notepad.

I use UltraEdit-32 for text, Java and XML editing plus XML Spy for testing and creation of DTDs. You can configure the text color-coding according to the file type - a big help in avoiding dumb typos. UltraEdit is not free, but for an application I use for hours every day, I figure it is well worth it. Bill
I think you can't have both, XMLSpy is "free" for personal usage (they will use your email for ads) but it costs about 900$ otherwise, Some products offers some limited and free versions. May be this is enough ? But why not to get a non free but low cost product ?? Any companies can buy one or several licenses, a product is complex to maintain and without money this is impossible to do a good job. If you want something for learning the basic try any free editors it should be enough, but if you want something to the work then consider the cost and the risk to use a non maintained editor. People want something free and want also the quality, this is an utopia for applications and finally they waste time and cost using poor applications...
