getting stock ticker symbols

i want to write a application that has some way to pick valid stock ticker symbols i mean when a user enters a ticker symbol (in my application) it must be validated that it is valid or not does anyone has any idea on it has anyone looked up how yahoo finance does it

There aren't many rules that you need to worry about here on the Ranch, but one that we take very seriously regards the use of proper names. Please take a look at the JavaRanch Naming Policy and adjust your display name to match it.

In particular, your display name must be a first and a last name separated by a space character, and must not be obviously fictitious.

This wikipedia entry for ticker_symbols should give you some idea of where to find symbols used in various exchanges.
Note that symbol lists are not static due to mergers, company name changes etc etc.
