How is the UML and RUP are related? I think UML comes in to picture in the elaboration phase of RUP. Am I right? Please correct me if my statement is wrong.

UML is a graphical modeling language which can be used to depict different issues about a project/system. It can be used to foster communication in a team, regardless of the used process.
RUP is a process framework, giving you a huge amount of practices you can pick from to build your own software development process. Many of those practices make use of UML, including, but not restricted to, the elaboration phase.
Did that help?

Applying UML and Patterns by Craig Larman discusses the use of UML in the context of RUP.

And it should be no surprise, much of RUP is documented in UML!

Oh, and which RUP phases use UML ... all of em! Some kind of model could be input or output of any RUP activity. And there's no point in making a UML model that's not going to be used later.
