I have never come across this practice before.
Is it no longer valid ?

It is still as valid as 1996. It is also probably the least understood practice.
See http://www.xprogramming.com/xpmag/whatisxp.htm#metaphor

The soul is dyed the color of its thoughts. Think only on those things that are in line with your principles and can bear the light of day. The content of your character is your choice. Day by day, what you do is who you become. Your integrity is your destiny - it is the light that guides your way. - Heraclitus

I think Beck & Co stopped talking about metaphor as it was causing too much confusion. Now if I could just remember what their new buzzword is ... maybe as simple as common vision. Erp, just checked on XProgramming.com and Ron Jeffries still has Metaphor on the What Is XP page.

A good question is never answered. It is not a bolt to be tightened into place but a seed to be planted and to bear more seed toward the hope of greening the landscape of the idea. John Ciardi

Another term often heard in this context is "System Of Names" (though it's not really synonymous).

Psychologists think dyslexics who tend not to be good at details learn to excel by seeing the bigger picture and coming up with original ideas.
Self-made millionaires are 4 times as likely to suffer from the condition.
Perhaps this is what XP is trying to incorporate.

Consistent Metaphor
This pattern seems to be consistent with the above.
