Hi All,

Question : I joined an organization which has recently implemented CMM3 Framework. My question is why would any organization go for CMM framework when SEI itself does not support it any more. isn't CMMI a better option than CMM.

can any one comment on

why CMM is still a prefered option for few organiztions.

Is CMM still an option for an ornaization trying to have process framework when better process frameworks are available.

are there any +'vs or reason you might want to go for CMM rather than CMMI

thanks

It's hardly "preferred" by anyone, especially if SEI has stopped providing "official" support for it (I wonder if anyone actually needs that support?).
I believe this must be a case of "old habits die hard, and old software even harder".

For example, I am currently involved in a project which will migrate from WebLogic 7.0 to WebLogic 8.1 within a couple of months. Well, WebLogic 8.1 has been out for who knows how long -- why haven't we upgraded already a year ago? I believe the answer is the same as for why your company is still using CMM and not CMMI. Even though the people involved would jump to a newer version right away, there is sometimes so much bureaucracy and politics involved that it simply doesn't happen so fast.

The suprise thing is, they have implemented CMM framework a month ago. From no process to CMM 3

it just suprises me that if any one is looking for a framework in the market as of now why would they go for one like CMM which is based on conventional water fall and no more supported.

its makes me wonder if there is something about CMM which makes them choose it instead of CMMI other than Bureaucracy & Politics.
The organization i work is big and has Project team size to max of 70-80 people running for about 1-2 years timeframe. is there any rational why CMM is preffered by few organization to other process in the market.

thanks

Oh, well. Maybe someone knew someone whose brother-in-law knows someone who has a warehouse full of old SW-CMM manuals to sell?

I think it also depends on the motivation. Perhaps they just want to impress some customers and think that they won't notice the missing "I" anyway?
