Any half-way decent interviewer is going to ask him open ended questions which show his understanding of the RUP. Better yet, they'll ask questions that go beyond the RUP to see if he understands the bigger picture.
He should read up on the RUP so that he understands what he should have been doing on that RUP project. He should also do some reading on how to prepare for an interview.
