Our team has been doing a developer stand up meeting for some time for a project. On our next project, we have one (or two) remote developers.

Does anybody have experience with stand up meetings that involve a phone or have read something about this?

We've had people call in a couple times when working from home. But this was someone who usually attended in person and had a feel for the dynamic.

I have never had remote developers in a team, but from what I've heard you can dramatically increase effectiveness by having them onsite for at least a week or two at the beginning.

I did this for several months, although it was a bit different to what you described.

All of the developers were local, but the project owners were remote. The major problem I noticed is that rather than addressing the project issues to the group, everyone addressed the phone. It ended up as a report to the owners and not a stand up.

Ilja: We've been working we these guys for quite some time. It's the stand ups that are new. We did standups on some projects for about a year. (The bigger ones or the ones I was involved in.) This is the first time these particular developers are on a project with us that will have a standup. So we've already taken care of that initial ramp up.

Dave: Hmm. That's something to think about. In our previous standups, we've addressed the issue of how to not make it just a status meeting to management. After a couple weeks, we got away from that and it became useful to the developers. So luckily we don't have the "report to the owners" problem compounding things. I'm glad you brought this up so we can think about finding the balance between talking to the phone and ignoring the phone. I think I'm going to make a piece of paper with the remote developer's name and or picture to put on the phone so we treat the phone as a person in the room. We'll see if it helps and if it is a training wheels thing or permanent thing.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
