laptop and battery

Bought a laptop in June 2000 : 433mhz and 128mb ram. One by one, the batteries have been running out( control panel showed four) and now only one is left. It charges and discharges in about 5-7 mins. The performance of the system is also going down steadily.
What I want to know is can we run our laptop entirely on external power source? Will the batteries or the lack of it affect the performance of the laptop? So should we compulsorily replace the batteries.
I've done disk cleanup, scandisk , disk defrag and latest virus scanning. But still the system is very very slow. Nothing seems to have made a difference.

You can defenitely run the laptop with external power. When u connect it to an external power , then ur battery will also be recharged ...

Maya, what I meant was that the life of the batteries seem to be over and will need to be replaced even if they are rechargeable every 2-3 years.
Probably, will need to format the hard disk to check if that improves its performance.
