Marilyn,
thanks for LaTeX link. Currently I could not get to downloads since my proxy doesn't permit ftp read-only access.
I decided to post a
REVIEW on your ESPERANTO multilingual dictionary download,
after some hesitation.
But then I decided that might be it, eventually, would have been useful
I was initially admired by a hit. But it was before I started using for real readings...
The vocabularies permit translation of only very-very basic words (with difficulty level of 3-4 years children books or even less). While they are help in initiation of a new language but almost no help for real life (even general) readings difficulty (I am more than 4 year old).
I cross-tried English, French; German, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Russian trying to find any combination that work well... and couldn't
I understood that the reasons are:

  • [list] different level of details of different vocabularies (English has 6.3 MB while Russian 0.4 MB. As a Result this combination does not work even for very basic PRIMARY words)
  • in the use of intermediary language (Esperanto). It is lost in any translation but with double lost and in combination with inter-level lost, the result is spectaculous loss
I have Deutsch – Englisch - Deutsch electronic dictionary from 1991 (from my colleague of mine of that time). It is less than 1.4 MB (DOS-mode, no mouse support) but it translates everything and has search ahead functionality (the words-list follows in accord with what is being typed. So after a few letters you hit into 20-letter word match from list)
The idea and first impressions are excellent but impractical. Like to be the Jack of all professions and master of none.
Have you been in touch with Esperanto?
