The problem is that this hard disk is not always readable. So I cannot understand when it is HD is lost and when it is me who does not understand how to connect it.
Also both hard disks are bootable. How to ascertain that only one of them is used for booting?

In Case of IDE you can connect four HDD at a time
there are four slots
1.Primary Master
2.Primary Slave
3.Secondary Master
4.Secondary Slave
To make any disk bootable you have to connect it to either to primary master or to secondary master not to the slave
if you do not want other HDD to be bootable disk make it slave (change the jumper of the hdd from master to slave and fix it on slave slot) and select the booting sequence from the CMOS

Or if your HDD has a jumper setting named 'CABLE SELECT', it makes things a lot easier. Just leave it at cable select and connect the your primary harddisk at the very end of the hard disk connector cable. CMOS will identify that as the HD to boot from and you can use the middle-connector of the same cable to connect your slave hard disk.
Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot, Sameer and Ashok,
can I make it on the fly, i.e. connect without rebooting?
Generally I know all that but
Can you give me any link?
Do you know (more animated/specialized) discussion forums for such kind of questions

You should turn off your PC (and ground it and yourself to get rid of all the static charges) before you touch the internals of a computer.
I dont have any links for other forums which carry out detailed discussions on this, but if you google, I am sure you will find more than enough resources on this. I vagely remember reading articles on how to connect a HDD with photos etc.
Good luck.

Thanks a lot, Ashok.
I am not lazy in googling but I had rather different approach and restricted resources for experimenting
