My IBM Deskstar just gave out this week.

So now I have a nice new WesternDigital. And when the guy was writing up the sale slip he said "You'll test this out first thing, right?".

Being in the kind of place where they have boxes of things stacked to the rafters, and surrounded by uber-geeks, I wanted to pocket my anti-static-bag wrapped HD and leave without embarassing myself. (no manuals, no retail boxes, this OEM-ville and besides geeks like us don't need no stinking boxes)

So how about it... asides from Windows Scandisk, is there a really good tool out there for discovering bad sectors on a brand new 80GB hard drive ?

Most hard drives manufacturers have diagnostic tools available for this sort of thing. I would start at Western Digital's website and see what they have.
