It's definitely possible and Sun was giving it away a year or so ago. I'm not sure what the system requirements are but I would guess that it would be comparable to Win2000.

Here's the link to Solaris Operating System for x86 Platforms. They are still giving it away for home use except for the cost of the media. I'm sure system requirements will be somewhere in that maze.

Look for the Solaris x86 hardware compatibility list on the Sun website. I tried installing 2.6 (x86) on a clone & it didn't fly.

2.6 was flakey as hell anyway. That was the last Solaris we used here. Now everything is Windows. I still prefer a flakey Unix to any Windows OS. But we just couldn't afford Sun hardware and Solaris anymore.

Disk space: 600 MB for desktops; 1 GB for servers
Memory: 64 MB minimum
surprisly low.

Don,
Probably the biggest concern I have found is with the graphics cards and network cards. I can live without Solaris recognising my sound card, and although I dont like it, I can live without my SCSI card (scanner and tape drive missing ) but not recognising my graphics card, makes it almost impossible to work with. And without networking connectivity - bleagh!
So make sure you check both of those on the compatibility list.
I was given the CDs for Solaris at one of the Sun roadshows. This was around 2 years ago. Ended up getting around 16 CDs because they gave away Solaris for intel (3 CDs), Solaris for SPARC (another 3), common documentation (2), common apps (1), Java jumpstart (4), Star Office for intel and sparc (2) ... cant remember what the other CD was - dont have it here.
Regards, Andrew

Hi Andrew:
thanks for your help!
i had some similar experience before. when i install window 200 advanced server on my computer, i have to go to my computer manufacturer web site to download several drivers to install on my computer, the drivers are o/s dependent. so i think i will probablly do the same when installing solaris on my computer.
thanks,
