Playing with Windows - Programitically

Hi,
Has anybody got any idea about how to shutdown and change the volume of your computer (running Windows XP) using a program? I know I should actually be googling "Windows Programming tutorial". But none of the tutorials talk about how one can play with the things like volume control and shutdown.

dont know about xp but did this on win98 using a c program using interrupt.
