This is not a Servlet question. I'll get it moved to the General Computing forum for you. Dave

Getting someone to think and try something out is much more useful than just telling them the answer.

We did a little discussion on this a while back at the JavaRanch, with much the same results. I had been rather surprised about the Smokey Stover connection myself. Back when I was a little type, I liked reading the Sunday Comics in the Daytona Beach Morning Journal when I went to stay with my grandfather, and Smokey Stover was one of my favorite strips. I was always particulary bemused by the "Notary Sojack" he liked to place in odd locations. However, when you need a quick meaningless variable, "foo" is a lot easier to type than "notary". Alas, unlike other many of the other old-time comics, I haven't been able to find major Smokey archives on the Internet.

One of the most odious afflictions that Business has inflicted on the modern English language is "pro-active". Most of the time it's simply redundantly used in place of the simple old word "active". And a good deal of the rest of the time it means "You're not overworked enough yet, so go out and find more!"
