Hi folks, I'm hoping to put my java skills to use, but my company strongly supports using microsoft office products like Excel, where Visual Basic is the dominant language.

I guess I'd be curious to hear stories of how people are using java with microsoft technologies, so maybe I can convince my IT department to install a decent virtual machine on my PC for starters...

My only hope might be to install (1) my personal copy of Mathematica, (2) Wolfram Research's Excel plug-in, and (3) Sun's VM. Then I'd be able to use J/Link in Math- to do some java work into Excel, but it's a specialized setup.

In my work,

I'm using java with MS. Office in Report module of read data from MS Office.

I'm have been used Jakarta POI

The POI project consists of APIs for manipulating various file formats based upon Microsoft's OLE 2 Compound Document format using pure Java. In short, you can read and write MS Excel files using Java. Soon, you'll be able to read and write Word files using Java. POI is your Java Excel solution as well as your Java Word solution. However, we have a complete API for porting other OLE 2 Compound Document formats and welcome others to participate.
