MS Office formats to PDF converter

Can somebody recommend any good to PDF converter? Ideally it should be multiplatform and not requiring Office to be present. Batch and API mode are just perfect.

OpenOffice comes to mind, which can open DOC files, create PDFs, and has a Java API.

We use Open Office in similar scenario to beef some content in documents. However it's a bit heavy, so I'm trying to find lighter solution for this particular task.

Well, you can hardly ask for something that understands MS Word and then turn around and ask for something lightweight. You can't have both.

I'm evaluating 5 products currently. I didn't come to a final decision yet, however it good to know that I do not do duplicate work.

PDF 995 is free and works as a print driver.

I'm using qvPDF, open source, available from SourceForge.
It's also working as a print driver.

I'm a very satisfied user.
