I dont think AVG is effective in removing viruses.last time my computer came into contact with viruses , AVG did not detect them until all my system fies had become infected, so i had to format all my computer.
From then on , i started using NORTON antivirus and it works fine to me.
i think it retails for some 50$, but you can get a 90 day trial link

Even i too was a patron of those freeware antiviruses like AVG till recently.
But as i have said there were 3 -4 instances in past where AVG could not protect my computer from them , and all my system files got infected. The only thing it could do was to quarantine or delete those infected files, but if i deleted my system files, my comp wouldnot start.
so i thought of putting an end to all these headache by buying NORTON , as my company also used a corporate edition of the same product.

I been using AVG on my systems and I never had an issue. Combine that with not downloading stuff you do not trust and it is fine.

I have had more issues with Norton bringing my machince to a standstill.

Pop up blockers - upgrade your browser. All the new ones have them installed.

I use AVG plus McAfee plus ZoneAlarm plus AdAware ...

AVG does this really annoying thing with my Mozilla e-mail client, apparently pre-screening messages. It runs forever and then downloads nothing. I have to disable it EVERY DAY to get any mail. AVG may get the boot as I don't think it has ever found anything the others didn't.

Is your pc able to run anything else at the same time?

I used AVG in the past and it seemed to be the best of the freeware anti-virus apps considering they all want to suck the life from your processor. Since the only thing I use my windows machine for is to play WoW I don't run any av software at all. All my real work is done on a real OS.

I'm moving this thread to General Computing...

Well, 2 gig. That's a lot to me ... I remember paying hundreds of dollars for a "6 pack" card to bump my first XT to 640k. I think the only thing that is noticeable when it runs is AVG scan.

If your system files become infected and your only option is to delete them, then you can boot to the OS CD and run repair. Copy the deleted files back over. Or you can try and install Windows over top of itself. by renameing Win.com and then installing. Should not loose any data, or driver info.
