For learning I used Netscape directory server http://enterprise.netscape.com/docs/directory/ ,its got good documentation and installation tips,
u can also refer here for java tutorial http://developer.netscape.com/docs/manuals/ , if you iplanet website, u can get download the tools and documentation.
You can also try this tutorial from Sun http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/Books/ldap/
If you want some free ldap server,u can try this www.openldap.org (reccommended by many geeks)
Initially the whole directory structure may confuse you,but its as easy as using database with java.

sorry I'm late, was on holidays.
As a sort of 'rough and ready' intro to LDAP, I liked the articles at http://www.ldapman.org/
There is also the IBM 'Intro to LDAP' redbook (no link available, sorry , check the IBM redbooks), but that it is not as friendly to read.
