cacerts and keystore query

I need to clarify if my understanding of the following part is correct:
I have created a keystore with a private key and a self-signed certificate. I then made a request to the CA and have received a signed trusted certificate.
I believe I should import this to the keystore I created.
So when do I import any trusted certificate into the cacerts file that comes with java jre?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
