suggestions for project

please help me get started with this simple getting started jaas project to demonstrate application of jaas.
Authentication/Authorization : User account and info pulled from Windows Active Directory
Application: A simple login to say a Unix server which interacts with the jaas to query for a user's authentication credentials and authorization to use the application.
where would the jaas actually reside ? on the application server ? or on another server ?
any other project that one has in mind or has implemented ?
