Hi all, I took the test this afternoon and got 94% (3 wrong). I got 1 wrong out of 5 in I/O and 2 wrong out of 7 in operators - one of the operator questions I missed was because I messed up a hex conversion; I'm not sure what the other ones were. A few observations:
The questions were mainly very clear and well-worded; none of those hopelessly vague or confusingly-worded questions you see on (some) mock exams. However, there was one question which was a fill-in-the-blank type asking for the program's output but whose code was missing a semi-colon and so would not have compiled. Since it was not a multiple choice with a "does not compile" option I assumed it was a typo and answered as if it would have compiled and run correctly. Anyone else get that one?
Make sure you know threads very well - quite a few questions on threads, several of them non-trivial.
Know the basic I/O classes and their constructors.
One question on GridBagLayout, but not requiring any detailed knowledge - just know what it is and in a general sense what it can do.
Make sure you understand what it means that method parameters in Java are always passed by value - if you're not absolutely sure about that study some more before you try the test.
The Khalid/Rasmussen book is not only the best certification preparation book I found but one of the best Java books I have seen. I found it invaluable.
Spend the $20 or so for JQPlus - their mock exams are very good preparation for the test. The real test is probably a little easier than the JQPlus exams, which makes them perfect practice.
Thanks to everyone for all the helpful posts here that I cinsulted while studying. Good luck. Brian N. Scott Sun Certified Java Programmer (as of 4 hours ago...)
