Hi
I passed SCJP with a 81%, it seems like a pretty simple exam i come from pure vb background and it took me 2.5 months( i also have a full time job of doing microsoft technologies) from laying hands on my first java book (thinking in java by bruce eckel) to become a scjp.( I also read Java Reference by Petric Norton and Certification guide by Robert ..and numerous pages of info on the net including javaranch).
I feel that this exam is no criteria to judge that a person KNOWS java it can only say that if u give a scjp some java to do he/she might figure it out and may be not efficiently but finish it up. I think there is no point in doing scjp just to pass as it mostly tests ur syntax knowledge for which there are many good tools like jbuilder but preparing for it and reading as much as possible and comparing java with other languages will certainly make you learn many things and I think that should be the real point not passing but preparing so that u pass.

Hello Ashish.Nice to hear that you have passed the exam.Well, one interesting thing is that from last two weeks i am looking for a man like you.And fortunately GOT you.
I am preparing for SCJP2.And along this i am having a course of software engineering in my 4 yrs. engimeering program. In this course we have are using VB6 as a tool.I started VB my self with the help of MSDN.But i am still in search of good VB book which starts from a ground level just like Complete Reference by Patric Naughton.
Another question is that i love development field. But at this stage i am confuse that does i master VB6 just like Java or both?
I want your advice at this stage.
Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Hassan.

I would have to suggest that msdn is the best thing for vb, there are so many books around but msdn is more then enough and vb ide/help itself are sufficient to learn vb which btw will completly become a new object oriented language as vb.net hence i would say that if there are no job requirements for u to learn master vb then u shold concentrate on java first and when u become scjp then try ur hands on vb.net which is available as of now as beta2 because reading java would help u understanding oo and few fundatmentals which then would help u to move to c#(which is copy of java in microsoft space but better) and vb.net easily, post me freely if u have any further questions or even technical question about vb or java

Hi Ashish, congrats for passing...
R u an MCSD also? After appearing SCJP this month i have a desire to preapre for and learn some Visual C++. I have thought of Ivor Horton's book. Where can i get MSDN? Can u suggest any good discussion forum on VC++?
I'll ultimate be a Java Programmer but I coded in VC++ earlier and in my job it will be helpful to be an MCSD in VC++. We dont have any MCSD on VC++ though we have several on VB in our country.
