studied my brains out for the past 3 weeks or so, took the test today and scored a 64. though i'm not thrilled about my score, i am happy i passed and want to thank the folks at javaranch, levteck, marcus green, maha anna, and bill brogden. i was scoring in the 70-85% range on the exam cram tests and marcus' mock exams.
i was pretty nervous going in, and the first 3 or 4 questions were pretty tough questions about threads, which kind of freaked me out. i had trouble recovering. also, the effects of the large iced tea i slurped down 15 minutes before the test did not do anything to help my concentration!
looking back, i wish i would have taken another few weeks to study - including doing more actual coding while studying, as many of you kind folks have suggested. and i wish i would have gotten a small iced tea.
ps - is it 'polite' for potential employers or co-workers to ask about the sjcp score? if so, is it 'polite' for me to change the subject?

Cathy,
I know it feels a little funny to score low on the exam but the point is really that you have the drive and have put in the effort to learn Java. Your "grade" will not impress coworkers and supervisors as much as raw determination and love of the language will, so don't sweat it. I passed with 71 today and am glad to see in black and white which areas I am weak in, for now I can hone those and expand on the objectives for the future.
Best,
Bryan

brian - congratulations on passing the exam, and thanks so much for the encouraging words. you're right! after taking a 'mental health' day off, i'm going to dive back into threads and inner classes and keep learning more of this wonderful java language.

Congrats on passing. It isn't the score that matters like Bryan said it is the fact you set out to pass it and you did!! sun decided that anyone who scores above a 61% is qualified to be considered a certified Java programmer and you exceded that mark - that's all that needs to be said!!
I think it would be considered tacky or not very appropriate for someone to ask you your score, it should be enough for them that you passed.

I have been programming in java for 5 years and when I took the test last month I scored an 84%. It can be a hard test depending on the questions you get. Like you, I got a lot of thread questions right out of the chute. Didn't drink any iced tea, though.

CONGRATS on Passing!
Do not worry about your score. I passed last week with a 67 and felt the same as you but I say my weak areas and now trying to make them not so weak. Looking forward to many more Sun Certification Exams.
