This is an interesting question raised in my mind that why Javaranch is using CGI intead of Servlets.Although this site is devoted to Java & related technologies.

I think only the message board is not using Java since it is a pre-packaged system from what I understand. The rest of the site uses Java Server Pages.

To add with Faisal, this message board is a package baught which is famously known as Ultimate Bulletin Board or UBB Forum written in Perl. You will see many UBB Forums on the net (i myself is a member of more than a dozen of them) but none enjoys so much traffic like javaranch....

It means the same as OTS (off the shelf). Something someone else created, and you just buy and setup using configuration files, as opposed to writing yourself.

I haven't found any Java based forum software that can really compare to offerings written in Perl or PHP I'm sorry to say. Especially any that can compete in price with those available for Perl and PHP (often free). UBB is pretty much the standard other forums are judged by, and therefore there are many forums available that are very UBB like, but cheaper (free).

Jive looks great and certainly can compete in price.

I have been tracking Jive very closely and the features of Versions 2.0 and above are impressive. It is not Open Source any more however. There is a probject to keep developing the pre version 2 of Jive called Meinds at SourceForge that is worth taking a look at.
