Well mine said I failed because
Automatic failure. Your command line does not conform to the exact format specified in your assignment.

The instructions state
When you submit your assignment, each part (client and server) must be executable using a command of this exact form:
java -jar <path_and_filename> [<mode>]

Here's part of my Readme.txt.
To run the client
1. to run in Local mode
a. run the following command
java -jar client.jar

OR

2. to run in Remote mode
a. run following command

java -jar client.jar remote

Oh well, I was really just trying to help them out, and I was really late in submitting, and did't put too much into passing, but at least I wanted to fail because of a different reason.

I'm sorry to hear that you failed Mark. But I recall you saying that you didn't have much time to complete the assignment. Those guys really look for very small details
Well...

What on earth should you have put?
Is it the case of the first letter of the mode? That is, Remote instead of remote? Local instead of local?
Or should you have had something like:
java -jar ./client.jar <local|remote| > (default is local) ?

From what I recall the accepted modes were "alone" or "server". I don't remember having seen "remote" somewhere...

Where did you see that. That was not in my instructions.html for sure.

Mark,
Here is an excerpt from my instructions.html (Section Deliverables):

The mode flag must be either "server", indicating the server program must run, "alone", indicating standalone mode, or left out entirely, in which case the network client and gui must run.

PS: Hey, you reached the 3000 posts, nice job

Now I see it in mine. I must need glasses or something. It just doesn't reach my brain. But it does also state that it can be "server", "alone", and blank. I used the "server" and blank method.
You know last week we booked a hotel through a website. When I got done it shoudl a $15 service charge on to p of it. I was like, they never told us that would happen. And of course later I retried to book a hotel and saw where they mentioned it.
I need a long break.

Is it possible to get the assignment requirements spec. *before* registering for SCJD? Or is it "classified" material. I'm still gearing up to get my SCJP 2 but I would like to do some "real" development for SCJD in parallel.

Unfortunately you need to sign up. Not really because of the assignment requirement, but mostly to get the code that Sun already provides for you.
You can always join us in the SCJD forum, and read up on some of the great techniques for scoring big on the assignment.
Good Luck with your SCJP too.

Mark, I also managed to fail as expected earlier. I saw the details statement as follows:
Automatic failure. Your server cannot safely handle multiple concurrent requests.

Very short details indeed...
