It is great to see all the posts by folks passing the exams... CONGRATS guys... but, I do not find any messages about failing on this board.
Is anyone aware of (or any data available) what percentage of people pass the SCJP and SCWCD ?

Howdy : )
Those numbers are definitely kept confidential. I can give you vague impressions, though and you can draw your own conclusions.
1) Newer exams tend to be *easier* than exams that have been evolving for a long time. SCWCD is new, SCJP is quite old (even though it's on a new version, it's still a relatively *old* [internet time, baby] exam).
2) Look at the style of questions in the SCWCD, and compare them to the style of questions in SCJP. For example, the SCWCD has very little in the way of tricky, complex code examples. SCJP has a LOT of that.
3) SCWCD is a very targeted, tighty-focused exam, with very specific objectives. The SCJP objectives cover a very wide range of potential topics, many of them completely unrelated to the others, except that they are all part of the language.
4) Lots and lots of people sign up for the SCJP more than once. Is it because they just really love it so much they want to do it again?
p.s. I guess it's not too soon to announce that Bert and I and someone else who co-wrote the SCWCD are writing a certification study guide for SCWCD, for O'Reilly.
Won't be out until next fall, though, as we're waiting for the new specs to be finalized (which will probably happen at JavaOne in the summer).
cheers!
Kathy

you know Vikram, it's rare to find brave souls here who would say "Yahoooo! I failed the exam... ". Although I think there were some who did (either here or in the xml forum) and described what they've learned from the experience. And these souls I more than admire.

I'd suggest overall about %60-70 for the first try on SCJP. This is the only site I've heard of any success for that test. At all other sites, if the certification is even mentioned, it's either failure, or someone wanting actual test questions.
I attribute that to this community knowing what it takes to become SCJP. I think the passing ratio of those who frequent this site is about %80-%90. That's just a guess though.
Peace...

Hi Kathy,
can you please expand on this - as I understand SCWCD is rather young exam, and new specification of (some) things exam cover, is going to be out in next several months.
Does this mean SCWCD is going to change? In which way? Offical objectives will change? Introducing new version of SCWCD?
The reason I'm asking is that my plan is (was?) to start styding SCWCD in next several weeks and do the exam in summer. I might wait for the exam change if there is going to be one in such near future.
Or in other words - how is specification change going to reflect on SCWCD?
Many thanks,
Milan

Thanks Kathy, Valentin, Boyet, John...
I flunked the one other certifictation exam that I took recently (MQSeries) . I found many people writing about their failures on the message boards (more often than not asking for help/advice for the next time) and analyzing their failures. This I would imagine could be used as anothe measure of difficulty of the exam itself.
Going by the pass messages, everyone on this ranch seemed to have passed (perfect world..)

4) Lots and lots of people sign up for the SCJP more than once. Is it because they just really love it so much they want to do it again?

This is kind of a re-assurance of my being in the real world.

Hi Kathy,
I have the same question as Milan Romasini. I plan to take the SCWCD exam sometime in the month of April or May. After reading your above statement I have started to give it a second thought.
Please explain what you mean by the above statement. I mean, how would the exam be different and also please suggest if I should still stick to my plan of taking the exam in May or should I wait for the new Version of the exam to be released.
Thanks,
Harry.

it concerns other factors rather than the exam itself!
