Yesterday I passed the SCJP 1.2 exam with 84%.
For preparation I used:
1. K&B book
2. Whizlabs J@Whiz exam simulator
3. JCertify exam simulator
4. Several other Java books for covering the AWT and IO-topics
I found the K&B book extremely helpful, because all exam objectives (except AWT and IO of course) were explained very clearly. The JCertify simulator was also very good, although I think their questions were a little harder than the real exam.
Unfortunately I didn't participate actively in the SCJP forum, but I read a lot of the postings which also helped me to clarify a lot of questions.
Good luck to all future candidates of the SCJP exam
Fred

Congratulations....
I have a few questions..
1. How long did you take to prepare for the exam.
2. Is it possible to list the books other than the certification ones that you found useful.
Thanks in advance.

Hi folks, thanks a lot for your congratulations.

Ravi,
I decided to take the exam about a year ago and started to prepare. Perhaps I could
have taken the exam earlier, but time besides my job and family is sparse so training for
the exam was rather irregular.
I began to learn Java by myself about 2 1/2 years ago without any programming experience in
another programming language. I used "Java how to Program" by Deitel & Deitel. This is a
very good book, because it is easy to read for non-programmers and has a lot of programming
exercises. I believe practice is the best way to learn a computer language. But on the other side since this book has a strong emphasis on practical issues it doesn't provide the knowledge necessary to take the SCJP exam. What I would strongly recommend in addition to the Deitel & Deitel book is "Beginning Java Objects" by Jacqui Barker. As the subtitle says this book leads you
from concepts to code. I think this book is almost a "must" for JAVA greenhorns.
I also used a lot of the Java tutorials from Sun that I also found quite helpful.
Greetings from Germany
Fred
