heyas!
i passed my scjp 1.2 exam today. i am very happy and releaved, as i start second year uni this week and i wanted to complete it beforehand.
to those reading this message that are currently studying, please let me share some thoughts with you guys:
1) after completing reading/questions on topics, in my opinion i felt javaranch.com was a fantastic way of sharing knowledge, and/or verifying quieries that i had. i think group discussion and participation is a wonderful and interesting way of learning (and very effective! )
2) i was extremely nervous and worried about the difficulty and skill required to pass the exam, and rightly so. i have covered java in my Bach. of Computer Sci & Tech, and i believe that the sun certification exam is much more difficult than any other exam i have previously sat. (please note this is only in my experience in examinations).
3) to those who are still studying, the topics i felt strongest in i found myself questioning things i wouldnt normally question, due plainly to the exam conditions and nerves. i can recommend not only doing as many mock exams as possible, but setting up an official timer and exam conditioned area (if possible) to ensure you can perform under pressure and this will increase your confidence when the real exam day comes
4) it took me one month of studying the scjp to pass.
finally i would like to thank javaranch.com and its community, i came across the site whilst studying for the exam, and i have not looked back. although part taking in multiple forums previously, none have been as kind, well informed, fun and dynamic. after a post your sure to get a response within the hour (often sooner) and this dynamic nature motivated me even more with my java.
marcus green's site (http://www.jchq.net) was a wonderful help, with both tutorials and great exams (which i felt near the difficulty of the scjp).
again thanks to everyone who has inspired me to pursue my programming, i am keen to repay the jesture by being a regular visitor on the boards!
see ya round

please note my second name is waugh not first name!
i sat the 1.2 for a few reasons:
1) i wanted to be tested and learn GUIs which was removed from the objectives of 1.4
2) i found a courseware available to act as a study aid, which i purchased before being fully aware of the implications -it would be silly to sit 1.4 after learning all about 1.2 objectives, regardless of their similarities
and finally im happy to sit the 1.4 exam too! better practice
thanks for the congrads

davy, do you believe that the 1.2 is harder than 1.4?
not content wise but in terms of questions in the exam?

Antoine,
I have not done the 1.4 yet, but may well do this later this year.
I am doing a distance learning program, and after java 1.2 it is JavaScript 1.2/1.3, which i need to do quickly.
But as far as my understanding from others, is that the 1.2 is a wee bit harder than the 1.4, because you need to remember GUI's layout managers and file I/O, i hear that these are out of the 1.4 but they included assertions., but I do have teh Kathy and Bert study guide book for the 1.4.
so, onwards and upwards I think after my distance learning program.
good luck Antoine.

goodluck to you too davy!
when you say distance program, do you mean your self teaching? or your being taught from an external/another location?
best of luck studying, im deciding the next course of action, ontop of uni, whether i do the 1.4 exam or look into the developer's exam etc..

well the distance learning, is mainly self taught. If i have any problems i can email the company, but this tales time and most of the time i get an answer based on what I had just read, so javaranch helps me out when i have problems, it is quicker, and you get other peoples way of explaining things, which is better than quoting a manual.
