Hi Ranchers!

I passed SCEA today with 91%. The exam had some tough questions and some easy ones.

Materials:
- Cade's SCEA book (read some chapters twice, Security, Design Patterns)
- Enterprise Java Beans 1.1 (I read only chapters 1-9)
- SCEA for J2EE Study Guide by Paul Allen (Messaging, Legacy, Internatiolization)
- Design Patterns GoF (I read this one before)
- UML by Fawler (I read this one twice while taking my IBM 486)
- Notes by Pete Morgan's (I read it once only)
- Whizlabs Simulator (I passed 8 out of 9 exams, took 2/3 exams a day)

It took me about one month, studying around 2-3 hours a day. Try to keep the momentum, increase the workload and rest the day before.

I recommend the following path if you don't have a cert yet:

SCJP -> IBM UML (or OMG, I recommend IBM's though) -> SCEA

Any advise for Part II and III will be appreciated. I was planning to read Cade's case, Allen's case and J2EE Patterns.

Thanks guys!

Geoffrey Chu
- SCEA (Part I cleared)
- IBM 486 UML OOAD
- SCJP 1.4

- Basically, after work. On weekends I invested some more time, but I took wednesdays off.

- About 12 years of experience total, in Client/Server (12), OOAD and Web Development (5 years). I do some Java Server Programming, not J2EE. However it is not my primary tool, I use it on/off for the last two years.

- OMG is the organization that maintains the standard of UML and CORBA, like W3C with HTML. They have three exams for UML (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced). I read that it is quite complicated and you have to know all the details of the diagrams and syntax. I decided to take the IBM 486 UML exam, it covers UML as a sketching tool and RUP as the methodology. It depends what you want to do with UML. The IBM exam was pretty tough, it took me two months and I just got a 77%.

- That is my opinion; for somebody who wants to move to analysis/design and don't want to do coding all the life. In US, a lot programming jobs are moving overseas, but the business requirements are still here. So I see myself as a connector between the requirements and programming. The implementation can be done here or overseas, depending on where you host your applications. I am just trying to move one step up. We have to adapt to the changes, the changes will not adapt to us.

- SCJP gives you the foundation of the programming language
- UML (OMG/IBM) gives you the ability of sketching/blueprinting and communicating with different teams all over the world (universal language)
- SCEA shows that you may have the skills to design and engineer a good system using Java Enterprise Technology -you can go with MS if you want to-.

Certifications are only highlights in your resume; but can open you the door for an interview.

regards,

Geoffrey
