It's difficult to say becos I am not working as a DBA even through my company sends me to take the 2 famous DBA certs. Currently, I am working as an AP, and my boss lets me to lead a small team with 3 people on some small projects. Also, I dont know how a master degree be important in overseas, but in HK, it is a must especially in my company. Thus, a master degree in CS/IT/SE, for me, means nothing, and it, of course, cannot be used as a strong bargan power for promotions or salary increment.

Rather, as my company now works with some banks for developing financial portal applcations, it sends me to study MSc(Fin) which I feel will be more useful for my current career path.

Hi Sri,

I guess salaries would vary a lot based on geography alone! What's the job market like for Oracle DBAs where you are? Where I am the market is good if you have 5+ years experience but somewhat rough for beginning DBAS I've heard.

That being said, the salary range would probably be 75k+ from 2-3 years on-the-job experience as a DBA in a reasonably challenging, 24/7 environment. For a beginning DBA, my personal experience was that I leveraged my other experience in IT, along with a lot of personal study, to get my foot in the door. Then I got certified as an Oracle DBA later. I have an MBA in finance but I've found that the degree helps in getting a higher salary only in certain sectors. Some employers couldn't care less, others, it makes a big difference. Current employer, it makes a big difference

Good luck, Sri. It's always the combination of experience and the certs that will get you the farthest....

Yes Nick. Sorry to assume currency US but I guess I was thinking that, since Sri mentioned his location in U.S., I could get by with just stating USDs

Why the emoticon for "eeek"?

Hi Sri,

I don't know much about pay scales in other parts of the country. In fact, things might have changed a lot even where I live since I have last looked for a position. It used to be pretty easy to get a pretty good idea of what an appropriate salary should be but nowadays it seems to vary a lot more. Sorry I cannot be more specific and helpful.

Nick, are you saying what your salary is or what? I'm not sure how a salary in Hong Kong would compare to a salary here, even if it is in USD. I wasn't saying what my salary is (that's private , just giving a basic figure that seems to be somewhat of a norm for DBAs with 2-3 yrs experience.

Sri, There are so many variables ( geographic location, type of employer, supply of available applicants for position, specific fit for position (extra skillsets, etc.), whether or not the position involves 24/7 on call support, benefits, other perks that make you like a particular job, and on and on). It's VERY hard to be specific. I guess just keep asking people

Good luck Sri.
