Just back from the exam center. Passed IBM 348: WebSphere Portal V5.0 Application Development today with 92%, below is the details: 1. Install, Setup and Configure the Development Environment: 100% 2. Architect, Implement and Design a Portal Solution: 100% 3. Write a Portlet: 85% 4. Testing and Debugging a Portal Solution: 100% 5. Backend Portlet Services: 80% 6. Additional Portlet Concepts: 100% The exam is not really difficult, but I did worst in section 3. Lots of questions related to Portlet APIs, and Portlet properties with HTML tags. Do pay attention to APIs related questions, they are quite tricky, the name of the methods are very similar. I refer to the following 2 books: Building Portals with the Java Portlet API IBM WebSphere Portal V5 A Guide for Portlet Application Development Thanks Dave, who is the author, gives me his excellent Portal book to me, it helps me a lot to understand the basic Portal concepts and the APIs. Without Dave's help, my study will not be that smooth. The red book provides lots of information on using WSAD to write, develop and debug portal applications. ICE sample test is also useful. Some questions, around 10, are quite similar to ICE questions. Make sure that you understand the theory behind each question, not just the correct answer for it. Finally, thanks IBM provides this voucher promotion. Nick [ January 13, 2005: Message edited by: Nicholas Cheung ]

We are currently developing applications using Portal v5.1, however, as this exam is not yet released (according to IBM, it will be released on Mar 2005), I just take this exam first. I will take the new exam in coming Mar if IBM continues to provide the promotion. Nick

I have worked with WAS Portal v5.1 for 2 months already, and the exam questions are quite API and server setting related, which does not that difficult to me, but just a bit tricky. I got 3 questions wrong in Portlet section, but I feel I know them all in fact. Nick

Congrats to Nick for great achievement ! What's next except Tiger Beta and Websphere Portal Development v5.1 ? I think you are full of energy to obtain certifications. Which certification you own or want to own is most market valuable ?

Dave's book gives you general ideas on Portlet APIs, while the redbook provides you info for how to develop Portal applications using WSAD. I read through the books 2 times, the 1st time is a fast scanning, then goto ICE test, and then 2nd time reading for unclear concepts.
Do you have any notes which you can share, please let me know.
Nope, I havent written any notes. Sorry for that. Nick

I have a question on setting the portlet mode. I'm trying to click on a link in the view mode and thru the action event, i want to traverse to the edit mode. I'm trying to set the mode modifier to REQUESTED. I want to tell the portal engine that my requested mode would be EDIT. How to do i do that?

The documentation says REQUESTED - switch to requested mode as specified in the action How do we request a specific mode in the portlet action? The following is what i'm doing in the doView() method for setting up the URI with action - PortletURI viewURI = response.createURI(PortletWindow.State.NORMAL); viewURI.addAction("EDIT_MODE"); And trying to get to the edit mode as shown below in the action handler - if(actionString.equals("EDIT_MODE")) { event.getRequest().setModeModifier(Portlet.ModeModifier.REQUESTED); } I know that the actionString stands for conveying the "type" of action performed, but i don't have any other ideas. Can someone help
