Hi Everyone,

This is my first post on 'Product and Other Certifications ' forum.

I have been working with java/j2ee technologies and design patterns for some time now. OOAD has been my interest from long, though i have never really worked on it extensively.

I am planning for IBM 486. I am not sure how difficult the exam would be to me as i have not worked on OOAD. Is IBM 486 recommended certification for fresher of OOAD or are there other certification to start with OOAD.

I look forward for guidence from you, Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Reshma

I don't know how easy or hard you're going to find it, to be honest. I know that I took it after I'd had some experience with OOAD, between a few minor classes my company sent me to and some work with UML in the office for projects. The majority of my preparation for the 486 exam was spent reading the suggested books on the IBM site... and they are good references for the examination. The only thing I think I would question is the value of an exam when it's based solely on book knowledge... but that's something only you can judge for yourself in the end.

If you're looking for an 'entry level' exam for OOAD and UML, 486 certainly does fit the bill (it's better for testing your knowledge on that alone on a beginning level than, say, the SCEA (which involves Java technology) or OMG's own exams, which seem more advanced from reading the listings). However, don't really mistake it by calling it a 'certification' per se - it's an exam that's part of several roles that IBM has, rather than a stand-alone certification. Passing it does not award a certificate.

Hi Reshma,
If you want to learn OOAD then go for IBM's 486 exam. If you are working with Object Oriented Programming languages such as C++, Java, C# then this would be the most helpful. It's worth investing $100 for this exam. If a fresher learns early the basic OOAD skills it would help him in the project, new opportunity etc.

IBM 486 Test is likely to be withdrawn after Dec 31 2006. If you do not become IBM Certified Enterprise Developer v5 at that date, you will only get a score report, but not certificate. Employers may not view this score report of withdrawn test as important as certificate. Be careful. Hope this help.

Hi Reshma, no replacement test is available at that moment.
You may consider to take other UML Tests such as OCUP (OMG Certified UML Professional) or IBM 633, 634 ,635

Hope this help.
