This week's book giveaway is in the Agile and other Processes forum. We're giving away four copies of The Mikado Method and have Ola Ellnestam and Daniel Brolund on-line! See this thread for details.
I don't answer for the site as a whole, but being advocates for one language doesn't have to mean we must advocate all Java, all the time. UBB is a widely-used board system. It happens to be written in Perl, mostly. The site owner likes it; seems good enough! I like Jikes; it's written in C, and this does not seem like a sellout of values to me. Anything else?

OOOh yeah!!! And if thats not enough, I use a Microsoft OS and browser to reach Javaranch........ Anyone else using this or do I have to take the whole credit for being dumb... Thanks for the complements, BTW. - satya
Madhav, now you're just talking crazy. We are all logging into our JavaOS machines with our bytecode rings to connect to this site....right?

If it wasn't for the poor responsiveness of this board, no one would care what language it's written in. Besides don't most programmers enjoy knocking other languages (other than their native java) when they get the chance. This is just another one of those opportunities. Let's face it, just about every java web (jsp/servlet) book in it's first chapter criticizes PERL for poor performance. To use PERL is not only a poor choice, but a sin. The java gods would not be happy.

Actually Perl performance is excellent once it has been optimized (as you can see from the improved performance of this board). Most of the Java books get it wrong because they don't take into account the advances made in running Perl on Unix/Linux servers.
Sorry, Michael. I completely forgot that side of the byte code... Esp. after a couple of glasses of wine, you sometimes don't know what you say... - satya
We're always open to new ideas. Jive has been considered more than once, but it seems that it always falls short somehow. As for the board being slow, it seems perfectly snappy to me, although I'm currently using a cable modem connection. Perhaps the real problem is not with the server, but with the bulk of each page. As for being dumb: I think we have a non-dumb site. The statement that you made makes me think that you came here only to promote your product. Your goals are not what is best for JavaRanch, but what is best for your pocket. Since jive is what you push, this makes me think that my buying jive will put money in your pocket. I find this approach to marketing to be in poor taste (trying to shame people into a product purchase). So now I'm even less inclined to consider jive.

The real culprit is probably the lack of a database. How efficient can it be using flat files?

Something curious at the Jive site. One of the Jive sites they brag about is StorageReview.com. But when I went there, at the bottom of their forum it says, "Powered by phpBB 2.0 RC-1 2001". Maybe Jive just didn't cut the mustard.

In any case, a forum is only as good as the people who post on it and I think that makes our forum one of the best!

Amen to that! It's the spirit of these forums that draws folks to it, not the muscle behind it. (whisper): <small>gotta admit that jive looks a little prettier than ubb though...</small> [ January 10, 2002: Message edited by: Junilu Lacar ]
phpBB is an excellent bulletin board. And it's free. You can have a fast, fully functioning board in about 1/2 hour. Go to http://forums.storagereview.net and register. Take it for a test drive. [ January 10, 2002: Message edited by: Jim Hall ]

I said nothing about this website being dumb, I really enjoy it! I have a problem with the UBB slowness. I tapped into a T-1 so I dont think that is the problem. Searching the UBB is just crazy. I didnt want to start a flame war. I actually like PERL and use it almost daily. As Jim Hall stated

I have no association with jive, I just enjoy it and thought it would be a could replacement. -

I take offense to the term "dumb" as it unfairly ridicules the large segment of our population that cannot speak, at least clearly. I prefer the more PC term "poopoo-caca". Thank you, that is all. btw, this site ROCKS.

I just installed phpBB2. And let me tell you...it's awesome. JavaRanch should take a look at this free BB. I was using a 1.x version and just upgraded...what a difference.
I don't feel any problem with current JavaRanch look&feel and mechanism! But the obvious question why JavaRanch does not use Java has been discussed earlier also....and we Java lovers would feel gr8 if everything held unchanged the forum is developed with server-side java technology ....no doubt...

I post to another java bulletin board www.ijug.org which makes use of XMB. This site looks great and the performance seems fine. Frank

javaranch is indeed a wonderful site.... i just think that maybe we should improve the search mechanism...
we recently just changed the search facility to the Google one -- the older search was causing the server to crash too often. We're in the process of moving things over to JiveSoftware -- hopefully the Search will be fixed then .
