Are there any books out for this certification that are specifically designed for the exam? Or, are people just using the myriad of books on various topics to patch together whatever they need?

There is no single book available yet for the exam specific topics... But as you might see, Richard Monson Haefel's J2EE Web Services book is the most suitable book for the exam currently... But there are only a few exam topics that are not covered in the book... For those topics, we do need to find other resources... Hope this helps...
