Can anybody tell me the main differences about those certifications? I guess that should be:
SCDJWS - Java oriented
IBM 288 - Java and WAS oriented
IBM 141 - main stream. I believe that it includes all the other ones.

Am I correct? Which one has the best market value? Which one will give you a better overall knowledge about the technology? IBM 141?

Hi,

Sun SCDJWS tests generic Java Web Services knowledge;
IBM 288 tests Java Web Services knowledge too, but it is product(Websphere and websphere studio) oriented;
IBM 141 tests XML technologies(eg.XML, DTD, XSD, ..), XML processing(DOM, SAX, ...), and XML rendering(XSLT, XPath, ...).

Hi Bricex

What is the relationship between web services and XML certifications? Are web services cert included in XML one? I mean, is XML more generic and gives you more overall knowledge about the technology?

Right now, I am preparing to take two IBM tests in one weekend (287 and 484) in order to get the ICED. Their contents are pretty similar.

But how about those certifications that I mentioned before? It looks like SCDJWS and IBM 288 are almost identical.

They are not related in the aspect of getting certified. However, as Web Services is based on XML, and thus, might be knowing more in XML make you easier to learn Web Services.

287 focus on developing JSP, Servlets and EJB on WSAD while 484 focus on various J2EE technologies, not only JSP, Servlets and EJB, but also JDBC, JCA, JAAS, JAXP, etc.

But how about those certifications that I mentioned before? It looks like SCDJWS and IBM 288 are almost identical.

SCDJWS focus on generic areas under J2EE, while IBM's focus on how to use WSAD to develop Web Services applications.

I totally agree with Nicholas, in the SCDJWS there are a much questions about WSDL, SOAP, UDDI, all of then use XML documents, as i had made XML exam by IBM i find much more easier to learn these technologies, due to my background gained studying for 141 exam, mainly the questions about XML Schema.

What can i say about the Three exams?
Well, 141 exam is focused in XML and their related technologies like, XML Schema, DTD, XPath, XSL, XSL-FO, a little about SOAP, WSDL and UDDI.
SCDJWS is about using Web Services in the J2EE 1.4 Plataform, it is about SOAP, WSDL, UDDI and the various Java technologies to use it like JAX-RPC, SAAJ, JAXR and so on, so, like I said before, you will had some questions that a good knowledge about XML will help.
IBM 288 is about creating Web Services using WSAD, it asks about the technologies but it focus on how use tthen in the WSAD enviroment, I can't say too much about that exam because I didin't take it until now, maybe by the end of december.

My advice, 141, SCDJWS and then 288.

At least, that was my choice.

I would not even deal with IBM 288 any more. WebSphere Application Server 6.0 is coming out. It will not be long until IBM 288 will be old (as it deals with WSAD 5.1.1). The Sun Certification is more platform neutral. I think it stays valid longer. I am preparing for SCJWCD now over the IBM 288.

It is a normal case because vendors always wanna upgrade their products. In fact, there is no rule of thumb that what exams should be taken. It really depends on whether you need vendor specific certs.
