Component Transcation Monitors are object oriented while TP Monitors are procedure oriented.

TP Monitors:
These basically use the services of REMOTE PROCEDURE CALLS (RPC).These are built in to the transaction processing languages like IBM's CICS, BEA's TUXEDO etc... Most of these languages are procedure oriented languages. But this need not be essentially the case. I had worked in a FOURTH generation Mainframe language known as NATURAL (AG company of Germany) which is an object oriented language. The clients work on the dumb terminals which have got the TERMINAL 3270,etc.. as the emulators.TP's could be looked up on as "Fat Servers" in most of the cases.
CTM :
The components are used in communicating with the Transaction Monitors(MONITOR : Is like a "block in which the transaction occurs".You might be knowing about semaphores.I guess you are already an SCJP,so i won't divulge more on this).Components are designed in such a way that they adhere to some standard Interfaces(say in ejb like javax.ejb.EJBHome ,etc). Both the client and the servers adhere to this component specification,so that the client and the servers could use the benefits of OO concepts and Techniques while constructing them. The examples of CTM's are Iplanet Application server,Weblogic Application server,
Websphere server...
thanks,
