Can the gurus comment on how much to read for the following and what to focus on specifically( for Part I only )
Protocols
Security
Internationalization
There is a plethora of information in the links and other resources. I just don't want to spend more time than what is necessary.
Any help/pointers is greatly appreciated.

Hi Ajith,
for Internationalization the book by Mark Cade & Simon Roberts "SCEA for J2EE Tec.", p.127..139, might be enough.

Ajith,
My views below...
Cade's book ia a good summary for most topics. Read that end to end.
Protocols - Read up the PDF (avail in the files section at SCEA PREP)
Security - Netscape's papers on PK Crypt, SSL, 3COM's paper on firewalls, Java 2 Security tutorial (SUN)...
Internationalization - Cade + I18N tutorial from SUN.
HTH.
