Hi,
I completed my certification two days ago. Here is copy of the report:
Test:
Sun Certified Enterprise Architect for Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition Technology Part II (310-061)
Date Taken:2004-02-20 16:03:20.483
Registration Number:k1adtt542c
Site:val06
Grade
Score:96
Comment:
This report shows the total points that could have been awarded in each section and the actual amount of points you were awarded. This information is provided in order to give you feedback on your relative strengths on a section basis. The maximum number of points you could have received is 100, minimum to pass is 70. Class Diagram (44 maximum) .......................... 41 Component Diagram (44 maximum) ...................... 44 Sequence/Colloboration Diagrams (12 maximum) ........ 11

First I want to say that this forum has been very helpful, especially with the level of detail one should provide.
About my certification - I started somewhere in mid December 2003. For part I, I spent less than a week to prepare (probably 3 days) and I passed with 89%.
Part II I started in the beginning of Januaray and submitted in the beginning of February.
I do not have previous J2EE "comerical" experience.
Regarding the assignment - one well known advice - Keep your solution simple!
What I submitted is - 1 class diagram, 1 component diagram and 11 sequence diagrams for the documented use cases. Also I submitted rather detail assumptions document with all my assumptions and design choices.
Good luck,
Dimitar

Congratulations Dimitar!!!
I have downloaded the assigment and planning to start working on it.
What UML tool did you use to create class diagrams, component diagrams and sequence diagrams?
Thanks in advance

Many Congratulations !!!
Do you have any recommendations on the books you referred for SCEA?
I have cleared SCEA Part I and now in the process of gearing up for SCEA II.
Thanks,
Deepak

Dimitar,
I am still stunned by your accomplishment on SCEA even though I first read your post 4 days ago. The amount of time you spent in peparing for it to pass the exams is unbelievably short.
How were you able to cover all the topics for part I within 3 days ?
Enlighten me!
Eugene

Congratulations!
Can you share with us how you created your component diagram(s)? I think many of us have the same problem.
Did you break up your component diagram into one diagram for each use case (like what Mark Cade did) or did you show just one component diagram? If you show just one component, isn't it going to get real messy with all the connectors running around?
Did you show the tiers (Web/EJB/JSP) in your component diagram?

Benedict Chng

Congrats!!
For part-1 it is really amazing that you finished in less than a week. Can you please tell me what all you referred and any tips for the preparation.
Thanks

Hello,
For all diagrams I used Rational Rose. (there is 16 days trial version available from their (IBM's) web site).
Books that I used:
1. Specifications and tutorials from Sun's web site, including the design patterns catalog.
2. Cade's SCEA Study guide. (this book will not teach you things you do not know. Rather it will show you portion of what you have to know, also will give you some idea of how much detail to put into your design)
3. Whizlabs simulator - it will show you what the real test would be. Something I did not like about this simulator is its price!
4. An year ago, read once, Designing enterprise Java applications with J2EE and UML. The book is Ok to give you some overview of what J2EE is all about, but I would not recommend it as primary study guide. Also I did not bother to read the case study.
About preparing for Part 1 for less than a week. Well, I did not start from ground zero. I have experience, and constantly working with and on distributed applications (even though not j2ee based), OO, databases etc.
Also, I had some general knowledge on J2EE - for example ocasionally reading a little bit about EJBs, and a few times trying some very simple things myself. But this was not anything consistent, neither anything like dedicated study. So probably now, less than a week does not sound that shocking.
I had only one component diagram. It is not that big, as some other people say. It is very clear, there are not any crossed lines etc.
Something that may help is - for all my diagrams I followed UML as outlined in the freely available UML specification. I did not use "exotic" notations as some of the books do.
I did not show any tiers, but in my assumption document I mentioned them with a word or two.
Dimitar
