HttpSession vs Stateful EJB

Dear all,
What is the advantages for using stateful EJB to store session state over HttpSession? According to Petstore example or most other samples, most use stateful EJB to implement rather that HttpSession. However, the session is created intially, and if use stateful EJB, it needs extra effort to create or manage the life cycle.

Sorry, missing one word, I mean most samples use stateful EJB to implement shopping cart rather than HttpSession.
