Hi folks,
Just passed my SCWCD exam. Now gathering resources for the SCEA exam. Can someone please recommend a good book for the part-1 of the exam ?? I have been following the HF series book for all the other exams. I am sure Kathy and her team will one day come up with a HF book for Architect exam too.

which one do u guys suggest among these two .. ??

1. Sun Certified Enterprise Architect for J2EE Study Guide (Exam 310-051)
by Paul Allen, Joseph Bambara;

OR

2. Sun Certified Enterprise Architect for J2EE Technology Study Guide
(2nd Edition)
by Mark Cade, Simon Roberts;

I have Cade book and I think it just gives you a very high level introduction to various pieces. You will need other books like Core J2EE Patterns, GOF Pattern Book etc. There is a good simulator available for SCEA I by Whizlabs.

I hope that you are looking out for a study guide. My suggestion would be to read both (Lets get the most of these books to our advantage. I didnt get a chance to read the Bambara one, but managed a 91% with Cade's book).
And Cade's guide includes materials for Part 2 also.

You need to read a lot of other books on Security,UML etc, apart from the study guide.

All the best.

Ramesh.

Thanx Ramesh for your reply. I have got "UML with Rational Rose" by Wendy Boggs. Is that fine for UML? . Also , which book/articles do u recommend for Security??

Hello Giju,
Take a look at UML Distilled by Martin Fowler, it is pretty good.
You will also need Core J2EE Patterns by Deepak Alur, John Crupi, Dan Malks.
Hope this helps.

I have reviewed both books and you may want to checkout the "Book Reviews" forum for my feedback.

I used the Allen/Bambara book for the first part. Many of the questions are like the ones you find on the actual test.

The key to doing well is by doing as many sample tests as you can find.

Hi Giju,

I dont have an idea about the 'UML with Rational Rose', but I feel that any of the UML book would be good enough to give a foundation on UML.

I have seen your other post regarding the study guide. I would suggest you not to start with the study guide, have it as your last step before the exam.

I followed the below books,

Applying UML and Patterns by Craig Larman.
UML Distilled by Martin Fowler.
Enterprise Java Beans by Richard Monson-Haefel.
Head First EJB.
Designing Enterprise Applications using J2EE.
Elements of Reusable software by Erich Gamma and others.
J2EE Design Patterns (Oreilly).
Core J2EE Patterns.
(and since Head First Design Patterns is available now you can refer that too)
Java Message Service by Richard Monson-Haefel (Oreilly).
Java Security by Scott Oaks (Oreilly).
and lots of articles from the net and ofcourse many mock exams.

I went through the Mark Cade's study guide just one month before I took the exam and it helped me a lot in recollecting things. I took almost a week to refresh the things with the study guide and for the next three weeks I took all the mock exams I could. And finally the real one.

Hope this would help you in preparing for the exam.

All the best,
Ramesh.
