I'm about to get started studying for the SCEA and while looking for books noticed that SCEA for J2EE Technology by Mark Cade is due out next month and is for J2EE 1.4

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0131482033/qid=1126870496/sr=1-8/ref=sr_1_10_8/202-6944156-4801433

Anyone know if there's new exams coming out soon as I'd prefer to hold off if there are ?

I am at same stage, With EJB 3.0 and JEE 5 about to be released, does it make sense to hold off until revised exam, Specially Part I which is more version specific.

FYI: that book was available for pre-order on both the US and canadian Amazon sites about 2 - 3 weeks ago - and it has mysteriously vanished (including right out of my shopping cart). Barnes and Noble lists it with a February 2005 release date. Yet the Prentice Hall web site lists nothing.

So, don't hold your breath.

If you have a close look at the cover art, you should notice two things:
  • Revised and Updated for J2EE 1.4
  • Draft cover as of 06/30/04

  • So some (of many) possible interpretations might be:
  • The book has been delayed again. There are plans to update the SCEA to J2EE 1.4.
  • Plans for the SCEA 1.4 may have been scrapped in favor of an SCEA 5.0 - necessitating a total update of the contents of the book, delaying it indefinitely.
  • The authors just got too busy with other business to complete the book in the foreseeable future.

  • Apparently there were rumors of an SCEA 1.4 update back in December 2002 - even the Java Ranch Sun Certified Enterprise Architect Faq mentions the possibility of the SCEA 1.4 sometime in 2004. The SCEA 1.4 was put on hold as the J2EE 1.4 spec still needed to be finalized. Here we are again, awaiting the finalization of EJB 3.0 and Enterprise Edition 5.0, possibly an SCEA 5.0 certification and the associated study material...

The waiting game doesn't always work.
