As per the definition of 'direct flight' at (http://www.travelselect.com/pages/glossary.html#direct)
---------------------------------------------------------
Direct Flights

Although the flight travels directly to its destination, it may stop at one or more locations for refuelling or passenger changes. However no changes of plane are required to reach your destination.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Now if a Direct flight stops at a location for passenger changes

Does that mean this Direct flight consist of 2 segment?

or

It will still be considered as 1 Segment.

My understanding is it should be considered as 2 segments.

Any thoughts?

Hi,

I will try to answer you based on my four years experience with airline transportation industry. Any flight that has an intermediate stop is broken into two segments. This is because the airline can sell just one half of the travel. Some companies provides flights composed by segments of other companies.

Does this help you?

Thanks Cleuton ,

In fact my understanding was same. Just got a doubt when checked the definition of 'direct flight' in the above-mentioned web site. I can say that the Direct flight will consist of 2 segments if it stops once on a way...right?

Yes. A direct flight is a flight which you dont have to change your seat. If the plane make a stop and you are not required to change the plane (although you may be asked to leave the plane for cleanning purposes) this is a direct flight.

If you have to change plane, then you have to reserve seats in two different flights (or segments).

Thats my understanding based on my previous experience with air transportation industry.
